Why Impact is more important than Accomplishment
Too often, leaders measure their success against big “accomplishments”:
Awards
Metrics
X amount of Money
Title
… and other standard tally marks “proving” they're great at their job and successful in their life.
But that’s not the full story, is it?
I saw this quote recently from @Sally Wolf:
“We corporate leaders often expect our legacies to be tied to things we’ve accomplished. But more often than not, we are remembered for who we are, how much we care, and how we show up in moments of need. And these moments are only just beginning, so please keep checking in with your colleagues, clients, teams… And with yourself, too.”
It’s a concept I work on with my executive clients all the time.
They often feel like in this new, technologically focused world, they can’t “accomplish” as much as they used to:
They don’t know the new tech or tools
They feel left behind
New generations are coming into the workplace and already know more about things like social media or ecommerce than they ever will
But what I remind them is this:
Your legacy is NOT just your accomplishments.
It’s how you lead, even in tough times.
It’s how you adapt, no matter how much you want to stay “stuck in your old ways.”
It’s what you learn, even from those relatively new in the industry or field.
It’s the initiative you take to evolve, no matter how daunting that feels.
It’s how you show up and “walk the walk”, teach resilience, care, exude positive energy, and respect those coming up after you.
So how are you building your legacy?
